Re: [RC] [RC] [RC] Study on electrolyte/ulcers - beckeg Jessica,
It was also in the high 30's for temperature, low humidity and you were doing about 5mph. You stopped after about 10 miles to rest and feed your horses. You did the same after 20 miles per hour.
I think the "watch your horse and know what he does" is good advice. Also, watch the weather, humidity and speed you are traveling.
July in Michigan is pretty hot and humid. I would consider (and do) use e-lytes more often then as opposed to cold and less humid March or April rides.
There is no correct answer for all horses. It depends on your horse, your speed, the ride terraine and the weather conditions.
Anyone got a formula that we can plug all that into?

What are the signs of a horse needing e-lyting? I have done up to 20 miles of trot/canter trails so far (haven't made it to a ride yet) and have never e-lyted my horse. I do plan on at least doing 50's with this guy and maybe 100's so I would like to know what to watch for so I know if he needs them to help perform better. After the 20 miles we did a couple weeks ago he was down in the 40's (hr) in about 10 mins and was tearing into his hay and beetpulp, still very energetic and ready to go.
