Re: [RC] rolled, crimped or whole? - Lif StrandAt 11:01 AM 3/18/2006, Ann Blankenship wrote:Although the whole oat may have more complete nutrition, it won?t help if it isn?t digested. I believe I read that it?s more difficult for the horse to digest whole or crimped oats? as witnessed by all the nice bits you?ll see in the manure. So I guess I?d come down on the ?rolled? side of this question. They can?t help if they don?t stay IN the horse, right? The problem with rolling or crimping is that the moment the seed is subjected to that process, it loses nutrition (enzymatic action and vitamins and who knows what all else). The more time between the processing and the horse's eating the seed, the less nutrition. So unless a person is crimping or rolling the oats just before feeding them, in a sense the horse is getting "empty nutrition" food, kind of like horsie junk food. ------------------------ Lif Strand, Research Associate Southwest Center for Resource Analysis Western New Mexico University (505) 773-4897 (505) 212-0108 FAX
