RE: [RC] Heart Monitor - Belt vs. Electrodes - Sharon LevasseurDon, do you have a Polar system or another brand? I have Polar. I replaced the transmitter part once and it did seem to work better for a while, but then not. I can't even FIND my watch right now so I suppose a new one is in order, and that will come with new batteries. I used to put the watch on the saddle just above my knee, just like yours. The odd readings happened in summer, so not a haircoat problem. Maybe not wet enough but I doubt it, he was always pretty sweaty. Maybe my belt isn't far enough back, it's in front of the cinch. But I find that if I put it UNDER the cinch, it screws up based on his speed... seems like the cinch (double elastic ends) has a different amount of pressure against my horse depending on what speed we're going. If that's the case, the electrode type won't work any better. Seriously now, I have used belt systems for years and they don't last more than 2-3 years. You probably need a new belt. Also with a winter coat and if the horse is not sweating much the belt gives erratic readings. Either shave off some fur or squirt some water above the belt when the readings are wrong. You also need new batteries in your watch every 2-3 years. What I finally did and worked the best was to put the belt between the cinch and the horse, removed the watch from my wrist and attached it to the saddle just above my knee, set the high limit on 130 with audible alarm, then just ride my ride unless I got an alarm then slow down and check things out. Set the low limit at 60 audible alarm and at vet checks I could be anywhere sponging, whatever and when the alarm beeped I asked for P&R. The watch stayed on the saddle at all times and the belt was glued to the cinch. No wires, no fuss, throw on the saddle, pull up the cinch, we got heart rate. Worked great at first (as long as I got it in exactly the right spot) but now I find it's inaccurate more often than it's accurate. That is, we trot along at 36 or 0 or 250... none of which can possibly be right... more often than we do at 85. Recently I haven't bothered to use it at all. Not sure what happened. -Sharon L.
