Re: [RC] Painful, cold fingers - Sisu West Ranch"... I'd like to know if anyone's got the perfect solution for cold hands that still allows a person to work with the hands...." Doesn't exist. The best that can be done is to dress very warmly, including a very warm hat, and snowmobile boots, and long johns. Then use some gloves that allow sufficent dexterity for your job. In addition put a pair of big big insulated chopper mittens on a string around your neck. Wear the mittens as much as possible. The problem is that people are designed to live in Africa, so when our body gets cold, the blood flow to the hands shuts off and bingo, our hands get cold. There is a story in a book on cold physiology (the book was written before WWII) where the researcher asked an Arctic native, if his hands got cold when he was waiting for the seal to come up through the hole in the ice.. The native said sure, and continued to wait for the seal. I guess his family was hungry enough that cold hands didn't matter. Thinsulate(TM) thermal insulation in a pair of gloves will allow you to have more dexterity than other gloves of equal warmth. Somewhere in the archives of 3M Company, are my lab notebooks documenting this fact in a series of quite uncomfortable experiments.
