each animal does have it's own personality just as people, dogs, etc. do. 
for some reason i always bond more with a gelding than i do a mare though. 
seems we just click better.  still have two mares, the rest are geldings, 
and the appy mare and i have an odd sort of relationship.  i really love her 
but she can drive me nuts!!  LOL i think i can her, too.  it's getting 
better so who knows in ten years or so we might be the closes of friends.  i 
get the distinct feeling that she thinks we are equals with her say so just 
as important as mine and doesn't understand why i don't understand that. 
had lots of different personalities in my horses but she's something 
different.  LOL my husband says she's a lot like me!
