Re: [RC] Vet Check holds - Winter, Randy or CherylIt's more like a game of chicken, that way, than an endurance competition. Who's willing to risk their horse the most until the other backs off. The Vet check won't sort it out as with a gate to a hold. Randy Awful idea. Back when we did that you could have a fit horse walk into a vet check at 60 and another horse with it that was running on heart that was *barely* 72 when the hold was up. With a straight hold they'd leave together! Talk about a recipe for disaster. The best part of the gate into the hold is that it separates horses up so that they're traveling with other horses that are the same level of fitness. I was asked to manage the Tennessee Spring Ride and wanted to do the gate into a hold for the first time. The old timers had a fit...said it "wasn't fair to horses that don't recover as fast" Well Duh! We finally had a compromise that first year and had a "Ten Minute Gate" into a hold. That means so long as they came down within TEN minutes of each other they left together. Talk about stupid. The next year they finally let me go straight gate into a hold. Now...would you like to hear their argument that vet cards would never work...everyone would lose them? How's about "can't put numbers on hips...you've got to wear these pennies?" I don't miss the "old way". Angie =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
