Interesting. I am RN. I have not heard of this as a
cause of osteoporosis. All 'drugs' have some side effects. Aspiran
probably would not be approved today but yet it has life saving side effects for
heart attacks. Many young women are on the Depo and when I was in Mid
East, the youngsters were giving each other their depo shots. Life has
side effects too. Perhaps the osteo was going to happen anyway but
for other reasons, ie diet, genetics?????
Since I
love the stuff, I have to chime in with my opposite experience. I have
been on Depo for 7 years. I had a bone density scan done at age 46 after
having been on it for 3 years and had the bone density of a 35 year old.
I will have another done this year - I'll let you all know if there's
been any change. Since the no periods, no PMS has made life MUCH more
enjoyable, there's not much that would induce me to trade!
I get mine
from Australia (for $33 each) and just do them myself to avoid running
to the MD's office every three months. Cost and time
effective.

Ridecamp Subject: [RC] Ladies Only -- Depo
You will probably have a difficult time getting a shot of Depo since
the FDA believes there is a connection between bone loss and long-term
use of Depo. Since I had been on Depo for 2+ years, my
physician would not give me another Depo shot until I got a Dexascan to see
if I had any bone loss. Guess what? I did. Don't
know if the loss is directly due to Depo but since I was 40 years old at
time of my diagnosis I believe it probably was the cause.
Personally, I think that Ridecamp is not the best place to seek or give
medical advice for people. The person who suggested Depo as a cure all
does not appear aware of the potential problems that may be associated with
Depo. And the sad news is that they (FDA) does not know if the
bone loss is reversible. Please seek medical advice from medical
professionals.
