RE: RE: [RC] Ivermectin - heidiFor really hard to worm horses, that's what I've done as well - but I understood (perhaps incorrectly) that the wormer was best given on an empty stomach. Lif, that was certainly true of many of the old-time dewormers, and I suspect it is still a better choice. But what concerns me most about just putting it in feed is whether or not they get all of it. Ivermectin is fairly ineffective if underdosed, so if one were to resort to putting it in feed, methinks it would pay to add a bit of extra to make up for spillage, droppage, or just plain sticking to the container. I am also concerned by what another poster said about giving 10 ml of ivermectin liquid to a 1200 lb horse, for the same reason. The oral dosage is 1 ml per 110 lbs, and since the effectiveness is so impacted by underdosing, it might be just about as effective to go pour it down a gopher hole. We generally give 10 ml to horses in the 900-1000 lb range, just to make sure they get an effective dose if any dribbles out. I'd sure rather use an extra ml per horse than not get the job done... With the 500 ml vials, that ends up being only about 30 cents more per horse. For a herd of 40, that's about the cost of one tube at the feed store...
