At a ride in Alabama once I warned some Yankee about the Spanish Moss. He just scoffed. Well, I was riding along behind him when he rode too close and some of it brushed his shoulder ... yep, it wrapped around his neck and pulled him right off his horse, up into the tree. The last I saw of him was his feet kicking as I rode by. Another time in Mississippi I told this story to a rider from West Texas. He said, don't worry, I've got these big spurs and if that stuff tries to grab me, I'll just dig in the spurs and hang on. Yep, you guessed it ... that moss grabbed him around the neck, he dug in the spurs, and the moss lifted him, horse and all, up into the tree. The last I saw of them was the horse's feet kicking as I rode by.
