Re: [RC] Why do horses drink out of mud puddles? Please post your answer :) - rides2far@xxxxxxxxI used to ride with a woman in the mountains who thought mountain streams were clean. I insisted that if I ever had to drink out there I'd drink out of a mud hole...safer. One day when we were riding there was a dead bloated dog in the creek. Nuff said. I know that at least with a mudhole it's rain water and you can see what all's laying in it...not whether there's somebody peeing off the bank or a dead animal upstream. :-P Another reason I think my horse likes mudholes is that they tend to be warmer. When you're running it feels better to drink room temp water instead of icewater. I've heard some say mudholes on gravel road had more calcium from the gravel. I don't know about that one.
