Re: [RC] "A horse that can't be cantered is pretty useless" - Jonni----- Original Message ----- From: "Truman Prevatt"> FWIW I don't develop a "big trot" because no matter how you cut it a big trot is normally (at lest partially) a hyper extended gait. If my horse isn't ready to canter a nice medium working trot is just fine. One with a nice topline and relaxed head carriage.<<< Indeed, most of those big big trots are tougher on the horses joints for long term than going into a canter, but I wanted the ability to ask this horse for it when I feel the need for short spurts. Also, someday, if he ever gets his head together, I'd love to make him my next Combined Driving horse too, and there are times, that we ask for a big extension. My last endurance horse who then was turned into my Combined Driving horse, had a crappy trot, and had trouble making the advanced times at the CDE's. Besides, it is a kick to be trotting along with someone, and kick it into over drive, and leave them in the dust and have THEM have to break into a canter to catch back up. <wink> Jonni =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
