[RC] Endurance - poorly trained horses/riders? - Ridecamp GuestPlease Reply to: Sharon Hahn sharon.hahn@xxxxxxx or ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx ========================================== I think it's more a matter of being good at different things. I got into distance riding because my horse and I are terrible at ring work. However, I wouldn't call her "poorly trained." She may not bend properly, but she can camp overnight and stand tied to the trailer for hours anywhere. She can travel at speed in close company on a loose rein without getting crazy or kicking. She hops right into the trailer when I want to go somewhere and will stand belly-deep in water while she's sponged. Many "well-trained" show horses are complete messes when it comes to basic horse manners and ground skills. In general, I think people focus on training the skills that they need most. If we have time to work on additional skills, that's even better. IN RESPONSE TO CINDY: Endurance riders, as a whole, and I include myself, have a reputation for very poor equitation and poorly trained horses. A perfect example is listening to all of us talk on Ridecamp about not knowing leads and diagonals. The lowest level pony club, 4-H kids would be appalled by our ignorance. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
