[RC] waiting to ride the young ones - Anita MessengerIt's not too extreme if you want to have a hardy horse into its 30s. ...... Put a 150 pound rider on them and the kinetic energy factor alone is quite demanding even when not taking the human's balance influence and control into effect. Marv "A computer beat me at chess once and I beat it for the rest of the day." Walker>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> It has *always* been our custom not to even attempt to ride a youngster until it was at least four years old (and most of the time it's older than that, especially if we are dealing with a taller/bigger horse), and this was long before people like Deb Bennett stepped forward. Over the years we have had people really give us a good dressing down for not starting them at younger ages, but we didn't care. We stuck to our guns. We have also encouraged the buyers of our younger horses to wait, and the vast majority have done that. We have always believed there are lots of good reasons for waiting -IOHO. This doesn't mean they can't have other good things done with them while they are growing - like being broke to drive, for instance. Several of our Morgans and Morabs have been/are broke to drive before they were put under saddle. Anita in Arkansas - Marv, your signature "comments" crack me up.
