RE: [RC] feeding foals - Susan E. Garlinghouse, D.V.M.

Sure, wild mustangs do it all the time. ;-)  Well, grass, anyway.  I’m assuming you’re talking about a weanling, not a brand new baby.  Yes, you can feed just good quality hay, but work with a nutritionist to analyze the hay and make sure the baby is getting sufficient minerals and protein.  You might need to supply just a vitamin/mineral supplement.  Start with maybe 1-1.5 lbs per 100 lbs bodyweight good quality alfalfa, and free choice mixed grass hay and add a supplement, plus loose salt.  But get someone to crunch the numbers for you.

Subject: [RC] feeding foals

Is it possible to raise a foal on hay alone?  Especially pertaining to vits/mins, for a healty youngster without the excesses of grains.

Thanks,

Karen in NY
