Re: [RC] gaited arabs? - Peter HarperTruman, I've been researching this for a while and this is the first detailed description I've found for gait genetics. The article intentionally combined what is thought to be over a hundred different gait modifying genes into the M and m modifiers for simplicity. TpMm was considered the "ideal" genetic signature for a well gaited TWH and MFT. However the article said most Big Lick TWH are ppMm or ppMM. This would explain the paceyness of many show TWH. To correct the pace they put heavy shoes on the front and light shoes on the hind to break up the pace into a square running walk. Conversly if you have a trotty TWH you put heavy shoes on the hind and light in the front to break up the trot. (Don't take this as a endorsement of show TWH shoeing practices.) With all this in mind if you are looking to breed a gaited arab you'd want to breed a trotting Arab TTmm to a Big Lick TWH ppMM and all the offspring would be the "ideal" TpMm. Anyone ready to the theory to the test? Regards, Pete __________________________________ Celebrate Yahoo!'s 10th Birthday! Yahoo!
