Re: [RC] Breaks and Screws and Plates, Oh My! - Ridecamp GuestPlease Reply to: Bruce Weary bweary@xxxxxxxxxxxx or ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx ========================================== Hi Dabney-- You looked fine at 20 Mule Team. What happened? Who's turn is it to watch you anyway? I know what you WANT to hear, but, since you asked, I'll advise you anyway. Stabilization devices (which is what we doctor types call screws and plates) are there to provide stability to an unstable fracture. While it's true that they stiffen and protect, their main purpose is to provide an environment in which the bone can begin to form and complete (without interruption) a callus at the site of the fracture. You shouldn't be thinking "Well, if I get dumped, and land on my wrist the plates and screws will protect me, right?" Another direct trauma to the fracture site can jar and disturb the forming callus, and delay or complicate healing. Having said that, I would let your orthopedist know what you want to do, and see if he gives you the green light. You can always do what I do when I'm injured--stay home, watch soap operas, have a good cry, eat bon-bons and balloon up like a beached whale in the summer sun. Then enjoy the whole getting in shape process all over again. Beides, if you don't got to Cuyama, that's one less horse I have to chase down. Good luck, Bruce PS.
