RE: [RC] scissor snaps - bobmorrisEver think of using the mini carabineers? Not easy to accidentally open, easy to use and fairly strong. I got caught for the second time in one week in a sworm of ground bees. I got bucked off the first time. The second time I chose to dismount while the horse was still moving forward, trying to avoid being bucked off again. She hit the end of the rein, the snap broke and I boinged into the ground backwards so hard, I bruised my ribs, broke or bruised my tailbone (it was a knot in the saddle by the time I was able to get back on) and either tore or sprained the ligaments running down the outside of one knee. I couldn't ride for a couple of months. I couldn't even sit in a chair without a brace on my back to keep my ribs from hurting. And all because of a cheap snap. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jonni" <jonnij@xxxxxxxx> To: "Ridecamp" <ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Tuesday, March 01, 2005 3:10 PM Subject: [RC] scissor snaps I have seen some folks take a smallish rubber band, and wrap it around the snap where they "scissor", then open the snap against the rubber band, and clip it on the bridle. The rubber band seems to keep the snap from coming open really easy, but you can still unsnap it if needed. I found, just buying really good quality snaps helps to not have them open or break to easy. This applies to ALL snaps. When I buy lead rope, I always open and close the snap a few times, to look it over, to make sure it is a good quality snap. Same with snaps for reins. You will find some really cheap snaps out there that come open way to easy, or break under very little pressure.
