When brands are/were registered, both the location and shape are usually specified. We should note that the Freeze Marking, strange symbols on the neck under the mane, is not a brand it is a marking. A brand is registered to a particular owner and is applied to all of his stock. The Freeze Marking is a method of placing a serial number (registry number if the animal is registered) on an individual horse. It is unique to that horse.
