Most branding that I am familiar with has been done on the neck, under the mane (for asthetic reasons).  Visible ones have been on shoulder etc.  Also, there is tatooing, like at the track.  With age, some tatoos can be difficult to read, though.  However, a horse that is tattoed certainly is identifable.
