I did make a full seat wool saddle cover.
It was for an english saddle, so I copied the saddle pad, which was cut much
like the saddle. I shaved about 1/2 inch of wooloff of the suede and used
leather glue instead of stitching. I made this pad out of wool scraps
given to me by a saddle maker.
Where ever I cut holes to attach ties, I
reinforced using leather glue and pieces of leather or leather
conchos. It took a few rides to get the holes right. Be sure
you can take the pad off on the test rides, as it can and will rub you wrong if
it bunches up.
I still use this saddle cover sometimes. I
am currently refitting a full seat marino wool cover to use as it really is much
softer and plusher than the one I originally made. But, I will hang onto
my homegrown version.
I've really been wanting a full-seat saddle cover so I can ride
in my shorts. >;-> I have some nice pieces of wool (old car
sear covers) that I could use to make one. Anyone have a pattern for
making one of these? If not, know where I can get one? Anyone made
one before and have some wool-sewing savvy to pass
along?
