[RC] Re:Flaxseed Grinders - to Kathy - EventXCKathy: when I feed any animal, I try to mimic, as close as possible, natural tendencies. One of the most important things about a wild animal diet, be it carnivore or herbivore, is variety...they never know what they are going to get from one day to the next. That is why I will recommend for you to feed both flax and BOSS (black oil sunflower seeds) if the horse will tolerate change. My horses, even my competition horse (eventer), get a lot of variety in their diets. I set a range of parameters that I have to meet during competition season (glycogen loading plus fat for cross-country endurance) and then I vary the diet around within those parameters. The parameters are different for the old, retired, fat guys (including my retired endurance horse) and slightly different for the middle-aged, skinny, Arab rescues. But since I started doing things this way (and for some of my clients) overall health and performance have improved (especially for mine - not counting our dressage in Jackson Hole, of course! ) Kim Henneman, DVM, CVA, CVC Park City UT USA =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
