Re: [RC] RC:President's Cup - John TeeterI think the Abu Dhabi course has both more sand and more elevation (although it's still very moderate elevation). But there are two factors - sand and heat/humidity. The early lameness pulls are likely both aggravation of pre-existing conditions and (I agree with Robin:) the effects of excessively rapid cooling on the muscles systems. From gate 3 and 4 there are many more metabolic pulls. elevated CRIs, hydration, etc. The heat/humidity interacting with the speed they are pushing. I've also seen hold times which are, IMO, extremely short for the effort expected. a total of 3 hours. with 30 minute holds (a 40 minute hold with a required exit evaluation is pretty much a 30 minute hold from the point of view of rest and recovery). I think we'd see fewer metabolic pulls with longer hold times (we like to see 50-60 minutes at our rides). But then it can become a series of 25km sprints seperated by long rest/recovery periods. The lameness issues will occur (often because of too-Much-too-Soon effects). The metabolic issues though, should be of much more concern. jt. (p.s. the leaders are just out on the last loop.
