RE: [RC] Barefoot horses & pavement - mcalexFWIW, I like doing some riding on hard roads (I avoid pavement, but more for the traffic, as we have a good hard county road that serves the same purpose) as a part of my LSD training, as it helps to toughen up the soft tissues and helps the bone remodeling. One doesn't want to do this at speed in the beginning, but with a green horse, hours and hours of WALKING on such surfaces will do wonders. I have a young horse I'm starting to bring along, and I'm planning to ride him solely at the walk this year. I'm keeping him barefoot, and we have tons of gravel, hard packed dirt/gravel, and essentially deserted concrete country roads around us. I had been planning to avoid the concrete because I didn't want to cause any long-term soft tissue damage. Are you saying, Heidi, that walking those roads not only is all right, but is actually beneficial in the long-term? Can you explain the benefits? Thanks!
