Re: [RC] flax seed - Kari Hanes

I've been doing some reading on flax seed (ground) and everyone seems to have a different opinion. One vet's site said only to feed it once or twice a week soaked with a mash or beet pulp because too much can be toxic. Another site said a tablespoon a day, another said 1/2 cup per day, below Mike feeds a cup a day. How do the rest of you on ridecamp feed this and why?
TIA
Kari

I bought a bag at Buck’s Feed in Cool (CA).  Also bought a bag at Echo Valley Feed in Auburn (CA).  Seems to be a common item.  That’s whole flax seed, so it doesn’t go bad very quickly (months).

I was originally feeding it whole (unground), about 2 cups worth a day.  I switched to grinding it, use about a cup a day, and the difference after 2 weeks is profound and noticeable – even through her winter coat, my mare is gleaming and shiny.  And that’s just the outside.  So definitely, grind it.  Just be aware that the essential oils volatize very quickly in the presence of heat, so grind small batches and keep them cool/cold.

Okay Mike, where do you get the 50# bags of flaxseed? I've been wanting to feed flaxseed but haven't seen it anywhere.
