In the children we call it Febrile Seizures and
they usually grow out of it with no residual. Everyone has a different
thresh hold for body temperatures. Some adults also tolerate fever better
than others. Had a sick foal yrs ago that would run high fevers l08 and
lay down. When hosed off, he got up and nursed. He was given
antibiotics but unfortunately the infection won. Heat stroke can kill
anyone if not treated. In 2003 in Iraq, there were about 7. It is
important for all of us to be aware of our limitations in re: heat
tolerance for both the rider and the horse. mas
Doc,what Steve Shaw described in the ridecamp w.r.t. Beverly's
horse convulsing is a probable "over heating problem resulting in
meningeal and cerebral irritation" I was working in Saudi Arabia 20
years back looking after Malaysian pilgrims in Mecca. It was a
particularly hot summer month at that time with temperatures beyond 50
degrees centigrade{around 100 fahrenheit} . We have cases of heat stroke
coming in by the minutes even in the wee hours of morning. The pilgrims
present with generalised convulsions and responded well to continuous
hosing with cool water and only occasionally need intravenous anti
convulsants.Almost a 100 % recovered totally with no long term residual
neurological deficits. Some very tough people of Afghan's origin that
strayed into our desert hospital in Arafah even were able to walk home
immediately after the water hosing! Beverly's horse has excellent
prognosis and this pair will be able to compete again once the "emotional
overload"wears off.My 2 cent
worth.
