Re: [RC] [RC] Causes of Suspensory Injuries - Truman PrevattMy vet does a lot of sports horses of all types, race, eventing, dressage, jumpers and a odd endurance horse here and there. He will tell you that the most common injury in dressage horses is suspensories. He will tell you the reason is the extended trot because of the hyper-extension.I always - when it is safe - let my horse select his gait. If he wants to canter - I figure he is more comfortable at the speed he is going at a canter. If I bring him back to a trot it is because I ask him to slow down. Truman Barbara McCrary wrote: In my experiences, absolutely! I have ridden 4 Arabs that all developed injured suspensories. I began to wonder why...all were my horses, so I wondered what I was doing wrong. I came to realize that because I loved a very fast extended trot, I encouraged that in all these horses. Common denominator, hyper-extension. I stopped riding that way and stopped looking for horses with a big trot. A very painful lesson......those were all very good horses, and I ruined them by my ignorance.
