[RC] bananas - NancyI have a 25 year old 3/4 Arab at my barn that loves bananas and just about any other fruit or veggie known to equines. His owner has given him bananas and all sorts of stuff from the day he was born. And he can tell if you have something the minute you get out of the car! Because his owner has always brought the goodies in plastic grocery bags, I swear he salivates and trumpets at the sight and sound of one. This horse is a character. Today all of the horses got raisins and dried mangos as a treat. My old quarter horse turned her nose up at both the raisins and the mangos, but she usually will only eat carrots. My half Arab, Jazzi ate everything offered to her and asked for more. Lyric would only eat the mangos and only after Jazzi ate them. Bottom line, a horse will eat what they like and are conditioned to eat. The more hungry a horse is the more different foods they will try. This comes in handy at rides when you are on the trail and are willing to share food with your horse. Now I am sure some foods are poisonous to horses, but aside from animal based protein I can only remember avocados ( got a few Vicodan on board for my bowling ball butt courtesy of Jazzi). So what are the other fruits/veggies NOT to give a horse? I asked my vet if they were ok, and he said he didn't know and hadn't heard of any other horses who ate them. Anyone out there with knowledge of bananas for horses, or a similar experience with a horse who likes them?
