I have never carried  a gun when I ride unless I'm going out away 
from "civilization" far enough that if something bad happens to my 
horse, I'll want the gun.  Nowadays that means any time I ride (nice 
living in the middle of nowhere but you do have to take 
responsibility into your own hands).
