On the front leg, the suspensory connects at the
back of the knee, so a high suspensory injury is typically very high up on
the back of the cannon. One of the vets on here can correct me if I'm
wrong, but I'm pretty sure it's similar for hind: connecting at
the hock, so should be visible on US.
But where on the horse is a "high suspensory" vs regular
suspensory??
Are high suspensory injuries within the upper portion of
any leg...and I'm thinking rear leg here. I didn't know an U/S could
visualize something within the thicker region of the stifle/lower hip
regions.
Please
reply on list - also very interested in this topic.
My gelding had a
strained supsensory last spring, and there was another spot on his high
suspensory that has looked "a little suspicious" (might be an old
injury) in two US's. The core lesion is all filled in now, so
we're in that "gradual loading" stage. My vet hasn't yet ruled
out a return to endurance competition, it's a
wait-and-see-how-he-responds situation. I'm sure it's very
case-by-case. However, I have read so many grim opinions about
high suspensory injuries and would love to hear if there are any success
stories.... or if I should just start shopping for another endurance
mount now!
