RE: [RC] ergots - heidiAnyone (vets??) out there.. I need help with an ergot problem.. I've discovered my new horse has huge ergots on his rear legs. They've got to be almost an inch from his body. They have splits in them almost all the way down to his skin. Should I DO something???? Is this normal??? I'm afraid if he hits them they'll split his skin and bleed????? I KNOW this is probably very ignorant of me...but I've never seen them this big on any of my horses, or seen them split like this? Yes, they do sometimes get that long. You are right that they can hang up or split and then tear the skin. Just nip them off close to the skin with a sharp set of hoof nippers or some other sharp cutting implement.
