Re: [RC] tailgating...your responsibility - Truman PrevattJody Rogers-Buttram wrote:That is true...but, I have seen cases (and it involved me and my horses) where when you move over and offer the trail to the tailgater, that they say, "oh, but I prefer to ride behind you, my horse doesn't need to go faster". No kidding. I've had more than one of those confrontations. At some point if they won't pass I warn them it is rider beware. It not so much the rider that is too close but maintaining constant distance (although those can be a pain) from your horse's butt, it those that drop back and then run up using your horse as a brake for theirs. At some point if a tailgater won't pass - it is their responsibility for the outcome. I haven't tried the "I shoe mine........" trick, maybe I should. One time I did, however, take off at a good gallop when we hit a wide part in the trail and then move my horse over with a leg yield thus opening a hole for the other horse to take off as a dead out runaway. I run along with him for about 100 meters - listening to the rider scream for her horse to slow down - then back my horse off; watching the other horse gallop into the sunset. I find that works pretty well - one more reasons for good dressage training for an endurance horse. Sometimes you need to be creative in how you get rid of tailgaters. Maybe I am a Grinch....but I like to ride ALONE. If preferring to ride alone makes you a Grinch, call me a Grinch. Truman the Grinch.
