[RC] Side effects of heartburn drugs like "Gastrogard" - Sisu West RanchFrom the Health section of the Missoulian, Tuesday, December 20, 2005 "Popular heartburn drugs linked to bacterial diarrhea" by Lindsey Tanner , Associated Press Dr. Sandra Dial and colleagues at McGill University...examined data on ... 18000 patients. During that time, 1,672 cases of C(lostridium)-diff(icile) were diagnosed and the nimbers increased from less than 1 per 100,00 in 1994 to 22 per 100,00 last year. Patients with prescriptins for powerful acid-fighters called proton pumnp inhibitors... were almost three times more likely to be diagnosed with the bug... Dr. L. Clifford McDonald, a researcher at the feteral Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said proton pump inhibitors recently were implicated in a C-diff outbreak at a hospital and nursing homes in Maine. Follows the usual call for more research etc. Everyone please note: This is a summary of a summary written by a reporter etc. As such it may be wrong etc. I only post this because it shows that proton pump inhibitors may have some side effects that change the bacterial balance in the gut. I have concluded that it is probably not a good thing to do anything that may mess up the gut bacteria in a competing endurance horse. It is my recommendation that if any one is thinking of changing the AERC rules to allow Gastrogard during competition, enough studies be done on horses to prove that something like this does not happen to horses.
