[RC] Probiotics article in EN - April

Speaking of probiotics, did anybody read the article in the November EN about Probiotics? It was reprinted from The Horse.

Some points that jumped out at me:

First, probiotics are not regulated, so as long as the company doesn't make any claims about effect, they don't have to prove their product is safe.

Second, one study showed that various probiotics didn't have in them what the label claimed. (I don't know what study or where to find it or what brands were tested.)

Third, the cited vet, Scott Weese, believes that adult horses need 100-500 billion colony forming units (CFUs) for the probiotics to have an effect. Fastrack has 2.5 billion per oz. OptaMax has 2.8 billion per oz. That's a lot of Fastrack or Optamax to reach that number of CFUs.
