[RC] Analyzing Home Made Electrolytes. - rides2far

OK Mike, you moron, let's see you put up or shut up and put your brain in
gear and try...for once...to attach it to your mouth. Just
kidding...trying to keep you from missing Tom so much but I know I can't
do it like he did. >g<

Alright, I finally broke down and studied Karen Chaton's electrolyte
comparison page and read labels and analyzed my own home made Ridgeway
Mixture.

First thing of note:

Ridgeway said "2 pt. salt, 2pt. lite salt and 1 pt. calcium" However,
the lite salt I've been getting turns out to be a "lite salt MIXTURE". I
checked the label on the "No Salt" brand and it's 650 mg. potassium per
oz. as opposed to Morton's lite salt MIXTURE which was almost 1/2 sodium
and 1/2 potassium. :-( Confusion sets in.

So...decided to compare various combinations with some of the endurance
favorite brands.

Sodium in a one ounce dose: Enduramax 5,528 Lyte Now 2,830 Perform 'n
Win 1,120
Ridgeway made with Morton lite salt 7,040 Ridgeway made with No Salt 5200

Potassium in a one ounce dose: Enduramax 3,657 Lyte Now 3,780 Perfom 'n
Win 910
Ridgeway with Morton Lite Salt 2,720 Ridgeway made win "No Salt" 4,720

Calcium: Enduramax 754 Lyte Now 1,870 Perform 'n Win n/a ?????
My Ridgeway recipe 1200 mg

Now...they also give Chloride numbers. Where do you get the Chloride
numbers? If Sodium Chloride is salt, and they only give you the amount of
sodium in there...do you just figure the chloride is around?

So I'm trying to decide which mix to copy. Looks like I should be using
the No Salt to closer mirror the percentages of the others. I can do
almost the same by putting 1 pt. salt 3 pt. lite salt and 1 pt. calcium.

Why does Perform 'n Win say n/a on calcium??? Isn't calcium a biggy for
us?

Now since the Calcium Carbonate is supposedly not absorbed what's the
best choice for the calcium? I noticed one brand said it used Calcium
Citrate. What's that?

Also, always thought the 35 mm film cannister scoop was around 2 oz.
Turns out it's just a little over one...maybe 1.25

The main thing that surprised me was how little of everything was in
Perform 'n Win.

Next question. Our horses supposedly become alkaline. The page on
Acculytes specifically made a point of saying it helped horses who became
acidic. What is the ingredient that affects the ph?

Does the carrier...applesauce or yogurt have an impact on the balance?
