[RC] [RC] Horse Color - Nat NelsonA friend recently bought a breed stock paint mare at the auction. The question is that the picture as a foal shows FOUR WHITE SOCKS. The mare only has two. Can foals be born with socks and then change to solid ? The blaze on the mare's head is exactly the same as the foal picture.>> Do you mean a breeding stock (aka solid horse) registered with the American Paint Horse Association (APHA)? If so, are you talking of the picture on the APHA registration papers? How old is the foal in the picture? Young foals tend to be lighter on the legs and underbelly as a form of camouflage making white markings difficult to decifer to the novice eye. White markings have a definate crisp outline when meeting to the main body color (sometimes you have to wet the hair to see the line). Pictures can distort this however. If your freind is sure that the horse in the picture has four white socks and her's does not AND the picture is on her horse's APHA registrtion papers. Then the papers do not match the horse and you should have her horse DNA'd. It used to be a common practice at the auction barns to sale an unregistered horse with a set of papers that match, to increase it's value to the buying public. That practice has dwendled due to many registries requiring DNA - but it still happens. ~Nat~ Buckeye, AZ __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo!
