[RC] broken wrist - Ridecamp GuestPlease Reply to: Donna Shrader bshrader@xxxxxxxxxxxxx or ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx ========================================== I would opt for the casting and no surgery. I worked for 25 years in an emergency room in the days when "open reduction and fixation" was rare. I saw thousands of fractured wrists which we reduced and casted right there in the ER and continued their follow-up care later with cast removals and rexrays with a miniscule number cases of non healing and that was after only one application of a cast and no xray until 4-6 weeks after the injury. With the early rexray thru the cast for position that they do today, you can always opt to do the plate thing later, if needbe. It isnt likely you will need to though. Also, thanks to riding horses, I have had personal experience with both treatments. Broke left wrist and had cast and uneventful healing and broke right forearm and had screws and plate (necessary due to location of fracture and not a pleasant procedure to go through, and very painful). However, there was no choice there. When given the option, just be patient and take care of yourself and you will heal. All of the risks involved with surgery are sometimes taken too lightly. Just IMHO. Good luck with whatever you decide. Donna =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
