I'd be really scared to feed my horse that way, even if we were going cross-country. What say the vet and feed experts on ridecamp? Dabney (who is neither of the above but is spending way too much time on RC lately...) responds: I developed a feed program just like this for Orzo, since he ties up if fed grain consistently. It worked so well on him, now I use it for all my horses. It's completely based on work: the harder/longer, the higher the calories and protein. So, after a ride they get all those goodies--how much and for how long, dependent on work done. (I just about free feed sweet feed & alfalfa after a 100 or during a 5 day multi-day, versus a half bucket & flake of alfalfa after a short conditioning ride.) But, while resting/turned out, they're returned to just low protein hays, and maybe some beet pulp and rice bran. Even I've been surprised this has never caused colic or tie up in the many years I've been doing it...KNOCK WOOD! SO, now let's hear from the REAL experts! Heidi?
