RE: [RC] Wondering about D-ring, Egg-butt, and full cheek bits - Ranelle RubinRosalie, If I use a bit (rather than an S hack), I prefer the Myler full cheek Level 1 full motion bit. It encourages flexion at the poll, is comfortable for the horse in that it allows complete tongue relief-you can tell when they do happen to grab a mouthful of grass, they can actually eat it. I like the full cheek as it seems to encourage and reeinforce the leg in bending excercises. The full cheek "points" do catch on stuff at times, so be aware when around the head if you go that way. If you need a whoa in a big way, it activates without a lot of force. I can take a picture if you like. I have not found this exact bit in a catalogue, Christiansen's here in Loomis, CA carries it, so I can get the style # if you like. I am using it on my new 5 yr old and he seems to like it (have not figured out a way to get my heart monitor to give me a digital readout of what he is thinking, so cannot say for sure-Steve Elliot, can you work on that??) Several Arabs I have ridden who used to "worry" the bit, do not do so with this one, which tells me it is more comfortable. I do plan to get my 5 yr old into an S hack to change at lunch vet check sometime this year. Let me know if you want me to work on getting the style #... Good luck, Ranelle What we truly and earnestly aspire to be, that in some sense we are. The mere aspiration, by changing the frame of mind, for the moment realizes itself. She was "lightly started" last spring and a loose-ring snaffle was used by the trainer. Over the last year, I've ground-trained and ridden her - the little trail on my land, doing flatwork and steering exercises in flat open areas, nothing more than an hour under saddle. I recently realized that her bit is a little too small. I measured it, and ring-to-ring, it's 5 3/4 inches. So I'm looking for a 6" bit, and since that is so long, I think I'd like to go to a french link. I also want to get away from the loose rings, she's sensitive and responsive enough that I really don't need to pinch her lips with a loose ring. Here's my question(s): In terms of use and response, what is the difference between D-ring, Egg-butt, and Full-Cheek? (I do know how they look, and I use an Egg-butt french link on my older Arabian, but I've never used a D-ring or Full-Cheek before.) And yes, I also work her in a halter and that great sidepull that Ed made for her, but I think it's good for her education to know about a bit. Thanks!
