[RC] Shoes in the Front Only - katswig@xxxxxxxxxxxxx

Angie asked:

With that in mind, wouldn't shoeing only the
front teach a horse to be heavy on the forehand?

It does, which is why only the uninformed or those who don't care if their
horse travels on the forehand do it. :)

Shoing only the front just perpetuates the horse's inclination to travel
heavy in front. If you have a broodmare that you don't ride, but you don't
want her feet to break up is about the only time I would say this is an
appropriate way to shoe. Saddle horses should be encouraged to shift their
weight backwards, and shoing just the front encourages exactly the opposite.

You won't find any horses in my barn shod that way (although I do have a
couple that are shod only behind, since their back feet are the only ones
that have excessive wear).
