[RC] Rearing Horses - katswig@xxxxxxxxxxxxxLindsay said: I am looking for some helpful advice on my problems with Hogan's rearing issues. If you want anything other than "rearing is too dangerous of a problem to deal with, get another horse" kind of advice, you are going to have to give more details about the problem. However, it is a dangerous problem to deal with (depending on what you mean by rearing, since rears come in many degrees depending on how far off the ground the front feet are). Assuming that you are talking about rearing up under saddle, the causes for this can be distilled down to about four: 1. Too much bit in too heavy of hands. 2. Resistance to going forward. 3. Some kind of physical pain/discomfort. 4. The horse thinks that is what it is supposed to do. or 5. Some combination of the above. :) The "fixes" for these different causes vary. But a horse that rears for any of these reasons, has already demonstrated that it has a "tendency" to rear (not all horses respond to the above problems by rearing up), and no matter how much you address the underlying cause, you will still have a horse that has a tendency to rear up (which is why some people say "get another horse" :)). If what you mean by rearing issues is that your horse brings its front feet of the ground 2-4 inches when it is resistant, then this isn't a particularly dangerous type of rearing, and if the horse reverts to it occasionally in a moment of forgetfulness, no big deal. If, however, your horse reaches for the sky with its hooves over its ears (actually, I have a couple of those, since nobody else wants such horses) at the drop of a hat, you haven't completely "fixed" it if your solution is to just stop dropping hats, in which case such horses are best left to people who don't mind horses that rear :). kat Orange County, Calif. -------------------------------------------------------------------- mail2web - Check your email from the web at http://mail2web.com/ . =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
