Re: [RC] trot vs canter - Linda HedgpethFrom: Truman Prevatt <<The one I have started is going to end up preferring the canter. There so many variables involved in which is the best for a particular horse. He has a nice little rolling canter at liberty and he canters everywhere so I figure once he gets some dressage training under his belt the canter will be the gait of choice for him. The hard and fast rule is - well it depends. Truman>> ************ Yeah, that's right, I know. I guess what I'm trying to say is: **If** a horse is a to-die-for #10 canterer and demonstrates he prefers it, are there specific tendon, bone, joint, etc. issues to watch for that would be different from training using the trot as the primary gait. Both the geldings I wrote of, happened to be what I call "uphill" in that their withers are higher than their hip. They both are tall - but not long-backed, NOT flat crouped, necks set higher into the shoulder, and have nice straight legs. I think the uphill ones are more talented canterers, especially when you start asking them for collection and more balance. That's been my experience. It would be great to hear from those who use the canter a lot, and what they watch for regarding wear & tear on hard and soft tissues in this gait vs the trot.
