RE: [RC] thoughts on drug usage and etc - Jackie CausgroveHi all,
Well, I've been lurking around the background on this topic. I'm a very much of a newbie, so.... But what has struck me is this. This discussion is no different than others in different disiplines and sports involving human and animals. At this point, performance enhancing drugs are diffuse throughout our society. Thus, it is no wonder that it crops up in the venues as well. (This is not an endoresement; just an observation).
As far as the race horses, very few are actually "sound". And some are given "legal" drugs - Lasix etc. And almost all will break down in time. It is an extremely rare racehorse that does not. Most race horses never even make it to the track; as they breakdown in training.
And although I am new to endurance, I have been involved in long distance dog sled racing. Again, there are many similarities in the previous discussions. There is often a "high pull rate" and dog deaths do occur. Is this bad for the overall public image? Of course. However, the vast majority of mushers take extremely good care of their dogs. Their dogs mean everything to them.
I would think that the same applies here.
Sorry for the rambling on a bit . I apologize if I have missed a mark.
Thanks
Jackie
