[RC] High Mileage International Horses! - Ridecamp GuestPlease Reply to: Naomi Preston mustanglady@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx or ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx ========================================== Perhaps times have changed......but in 1991 at the N. American Champs in Carson City, Individual Gold, Silver and Bronze were all won by HIGH MILEAGE horses. Darla Westlake's RT Muffin (6,000+ that year, career 9,000+), Becky Hart's Rio (6,000+ that year, 10,000+ career), and Naomi Preston's Mustang Lady (4700+, career 5000+). That's 17,000 miles between the top three horses. I'm not so sure high mileage and international riding can't go together! Personally, I think obtaining high mileage on a horse indicates consistently exceptional care of the horse in all aspects (feeding, training, competing, shoeing, etc., etc), building a strong "base" before competing at upper levels, and a smart rider, who cares for the horse more than their own ego. And by the way, anyone who thinks a 12 hr. 100 is ABUSE has not witnessed the finish line of many 100's. Many horses completing a 100 mile ride look BETTER than many horses finishing a FAST 50. I've heard Vet's say this at award ceremonies at rides, also.
