[RC] LD: It's Getting Ugly in Here - rides2farI really don't think that was what was said. What I read as said was risk increases with distance. That is pretty much a given. I just feel there are way too many variables to make such a simplistic statement. Risk increases with lack of experience, or with having a horse that isn't properly conditioned mentally or physically, or even isn't of the proper physical make-up for a ride. The only ride I can think of that I did where I had to really ease a horse in because I probably over-rode him that day was one of my earliest rides when I rode a "possible Standardbred cross" that a friend had bought the week before on a 25. (this was 1988...I had much to learn) To be honest, that 25 was a short 25...but I let him keep up with a fit stablemate (trotting) and it was more than he should have done that day. I've never ridden a horse 100 miles...or 50...that almost didn't make the 30 min. cut-off. I'm sure I could have stressed one even worse in 5 miles if I'd tried. I really have nothing to say on the whole LD debate thing...but I don't care for longer distances being described as a place for people who aren't as concerned about their horses.
