RE: [RC] Waterers/Heidi - heidiHeidi-I don't think you need to turn off the power in warm weather. There is no doubt a thermostatic control. With mine(not a Brower),the only time I turn it off is when hosing it out/cleaning in very cold weather.(If you leave the power on at that time, the element glows red,and after a dozen or so such episodes,it will fail,as mine did.) As for those small paddle type waters,I think they might have some problems, but other on this board have been satisfied with them. Actually, Ray, the reason why I turn them off when it isn't actually freezing is because here at 5000' in the north, even in summer we get nights chilly enough to make them turn on, even though it doesn't quite freeze. I can see a significant differenee in my power bill in the spring and fall particularly if I leave them on. I'm sure it wouldn't hurt anything, and indeed in August they probably would not turn on. But much of the spring and fall, they will turn on occasionally at night when they really don't need to. We set ours up with a breaker box up by the house--sometimes we will flip them back on for a few days if a bad patch is forcast in fall or spring, but otherwise we leave them off once they reliably won't freeze.
