RE: [RC] LD BC - Compromise?? - heidiI have not heard a valid reason why the time/speed factor must remain as part of the official AERC LD BC form. Actually, someone did address it, but I can't remember who it was. Basically, it is so one isn't comparing apples to oranges. If a horse completes 25 miles in 3 hours, he has done more work than one who completes it in 5.5 hours. While the time does not impact the score nearly as much as it does on longer distances, it is still an equalizer if the times are REALLY divergent. Same reason why we have a weight factor--if the horse carried 250 lbs vs 150 lbs, he has likewise done more work, and he gets some credit for that in his score. If you want to leave time out of it entirely, then CTR is the sport you're after. In CTR, you aim for an "optimal" time, and then all you get are vet scores. Of course, you will be penalized for being early OR late, and your time window will probably only be about half an hour. That is what is needed to "level the playing field" if time is removed from the scoring system. CTR is a wonderful sport--but it isn't LD.
