RE: [RC] Automatic Waterers? What do you use? - heidiI have looked at the Bar Bar A automatic waterers on the web. They seem like a great idea where the water drains underground after each use and there is nothing to freeze. Has anyone used one or have other suggestions? I checked the archives and didn't see much info. I'm not familiar with that brand, but it sounds like they are ones where the horse has to press something to get water. In really cold weather, these can be uncomfortable for the horse to use, and in really hot weather, they are also uncomfortable to use. I love my Brower waterers--there is water available all the time at about 50 degrees. The chamber underneath the pan is heated so that it stays an even temperature, and the pipe coming up through also stays that temperature. In summer, you just turn the power off to them, and they stay reasonably cool as well, due to the pan being surrounded by the cooler air underneath. I've got two double ones that service four pastures, and I am bound and determined to get them for my stallion paddocks as well before next winter! Ours have worked faithfully down to -25F, and I know people with them in even colder areas who have said they have continued to work fine down to -40F and colder.
