[RC] Veterinarians: Crucial & Underpaid - cynthia hambergHello All of You Great Endurance Riders Out There, --After just finishing up the results for the Easy Come Easy Go/ Turkey Trot (PS), I finally have a chance to breathe...The AERC gives Ride Managers until Dec. 1st to post--very difficult after a Nov. 26th ride date!!!~Anyway, my other concern arose when Dave Braithwaite and I were marking trail, mile after mile, and talking about the upcoming ride. We KNOW that our veterinarians are highly qualified individuals who love this sport, yet they are highly underpaid. To put it in a nutshell, the average vet makes only $400.00-$450.00 for showing up ALL afternoon/evenening on Friday & putting in a 12-15 hour day on Saturday...We were able to pay our vets more than that this year--fortunately. Dave & I would like to see the AERC help to fund our precious ride veterinarians. All of our vets must be AERC members, and a complete record therefore must exist of each ride that a single vet does. A 'stipend' or 'bonus' per ride vetted would be a great incentive and a wonderful way for the AERC to say, "Thank You." I ran this by a few of my friends who rode the Turkey Trot as well and they agreed--wholeheartedly saying, "Raise our AERC annual dues by $5.00 each--or whatever it takes!" Thanks for listening, & Take Care of Your Horses, Dr. Cynthia Hamberg, Ride Mgr. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
