FW: RE: [RC] [RC] cribbing - Amber B FortSame here, genetics didn't have anything to do with my cribber. He came from non cribbing parents, obtained by I am my ex husband as a yearling. NEVER offered to crib until he was about 11 years old. What I believed caused it was stress. My husband at the time and I had just gone through a divorce and he got the horse. It took me six month of negotiating with him to let me get the horse. When he finally agreed, I went to pick up this gelding who was pastured in a 5 acre weed patch, with NO other livestock or anything for company. Up to this point, he had NEVER been completely alone, always at least a cow or another horse in with him. He was also 100 pounds under weight (I was furious). When I got him home, it took me about 4 months to get his weight back up and I noticed he would grab the bucket and shake, thinking this was due to his not getting regular feedings when with my ex. This progressed to full blown wind sucking. I thought for awhile that he was doing it, just never heard him gulp air. Thankfully, he only did it when stalled. By the time I realized he was a full blown cribber, he was 13 years old. It took about a year to progress from the shaking the bucket to sucking air.
