You don't need to run the bases when the ball is somewhere in outside the stadium. Kidding aside, most of his came after the 5th inning when the pitchers were starting to tire - losing some speed or control. Today he would have faced a fresh pitcher. He was patient and if he got a ball he could hit he crushed it. However, he hit his home runs when they played 100 games a season instead of 150 games a season - when the season started in May and ended in mid Sept. His unique attribute was he could read a license plate before a normal person could see the car.
