He used to hit the bars before the day games. Probably the only guy that
saw the ball better after a quart of cheap booze. He hit a home run
about every six times at bat! Think about how many he would have had if
he could have really seen the ball?

He came up as a pitcher and the Red Sox traded him because the was not a
great pitcher and too big and slow to play the field and run the bases.
My oh my can you say poor scouting ;-) . You don't need to run the bases
when the ball is somewhere in outside the stadium.

Kidding aside, most of his came after the 5th inning when the pitchers
were starting to tire - losing some speed or control. Today he would
have faced a fresh pitcher.  He was patient and if he got a ball he
could hit he crushed it. However, he hit his home runs when they played
100 games a season instead of 150 games a season - when the season
started in May and ended in mid Sept. His unique attribute was he could
read a license plate before a normal person could see the car.
